Laughlin Announces $4.2 Million in Grant Funding for Community and Youth Programs in Erie

HARRISBURG – Sen. Dan Laughlin (R-49) announced significant investments in Erie’s community safety and youth development through the approval of Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) and Building Opportunity through Out-of-School Time (BOOST) grants by the School Safety and Security Committee.

“I am incredibly proud of the work being done in Erie to support our youth and ensure the safety and well-being of our community,” said Laughlin. “These grants demonstrate the power of collaboration between law enforcement, schools, community organizations and local leaders to address challenges and build a stronger foundation for the future.”

The Pennsylvania State Alliance of YMCAs received $1.5 million to improve after-school and summer programs at local YMCAs, promoting academic improvement and reduced juvenile crime for more than 15,800 at-risk youth.

The Pennsylvania Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs also received $1.5 million to expand out-of-school services for at-risk youth to support programs that promote academic and social-emotional growth, reduce negative behaviors and provide safe environments.

The City of Erie was awarded $950,000 in VIP funding to support five officers in the juvenile unit and crisis care of the Erie Police Department. The specialized units address issues such as mental and behavioral health crises, substance use disorders, homelessness, gun violence and domestic violence. By partnering with Erie’s public schools and juvenile probation, the juvenile unit helps at-risk youth access important programs and resources, supporting success and reducing their chances of entering the justice system.

The Erie Police Athletic League was awarded $250,000 in BOOST funding to support the salaries of three full-time youth officers. The officers will assist in coordinating tutoring, mentoring, summer camps, educational field trips and recreational opportunities for 1,700 students at 24 Erie locations.
