A measure (Senate Bill 995) introduced by Senator Dan Laughlin (R-49) to help Pennsylvania’s farmers by updating size restrictions on multipurpose agriculture vehicles (MAV) was signed into law today (October 29) by the Governor.
The new law allows farmers to use MAVs — commonly known as all-terrain vehicles and “side by side” vehicles — of up to 66-inches wide on public roads when they are only traveling a very limited distance from their farms.
Previously, farmers were limited to MAVs of up to 62-inches wide even though many newer MAVs measure out at 64-inches.
“That two-inch difference may not seem to be drastic, but by using these vehicles on roadways, our farmers found themselves in violation of the vehicle code,” said Senator Laughlin. “This new law is part of our continuing efforts to help Pennsylvania farmers by updating state statutes to reflect changes in the agricultural industry.”
Senator Laughlin’s measure does not increase the distances that farmers are able to travel by MAV, nor does it roll back any safety measures that farmers must comply with in order to use these vehicles on the road.
