Laughlin Announces Grant to Help Improve Trout Run Watershed Water Quality

HARRISBURG – Sen. Dan Laughlin (R-49) announced the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has been awarded a more than $169,000 grant to help improve water quality in the Trout Run (Leboeuf Lake) Watershed in Waterford Township, Erie County.

“As an avid sportsman, I understand the importance of improving water quality in the Trout Run Watershed,” said Laughlin. “It can help to protect the watershed’s wild trout populations, as well as positively impact Lake Leboeuf, which Trout Run feeds, and the sensitive freshwater mussels and fish species within the downstream areas of the adjacent French Creek watershed.”

The funding will be used for targeted landowner outreach to implement erosion and sediment controls on farmlands, plant 10 acres of forested riparian buffers and grass filter strips, and stabilize 1,000 linear feet of streambank.

“These landowner outreach efforts will foster conversations about how to reduce excess nutrients and fertilizers from agricultural operations which are the leading causes of reduced water quality in the watershed,” Laughlin said. “This funding will help make a difference for one of Erie County’s great outdoor treasures.”
